Mini Abdominoplasty / Mini Tummy Tuck

“Beauty Through Mastery” Serving Miami, Boca Raton, Florida and surrounding areas

A mini-abdominoplasty or a “mini-tummy tuck” refers to the reshaping of the abdomen, or mid-section. The difference between a mini-abdominoplasty and a regular abdominoplasty has to do with the length of the incision on the lower abdomen. A regular abdominoplasty usually requires an incision that extends from hip to hip. This incision allows for the removal of excess skin of the abdomen. However, sometimes the abdomen requires tightening of the underlying muscles without the need for any skin removal, or a very small amount of skin removal. In these instances, a much shorter incision on the lower abdomen is used to gain access to the abdominal muscles. The abdominal muscles are tightened like a corset to achieve flattening of the abdomen and accentuation of the lateral curves of the mid-section. Following muscle tightening, the abdominal skin is pulled down, and any small portion of excess skin is removed. In addition, a mini-abdominoplasty avoids an incision around the belly button. Instead the belly button is pulled down slightly when the skin is tightened.

Mini-abdominoplasty is frequently performed with precise liposuction to further refine the shape of the mid-section, and create a beautiful, natural and feminine result. The goal is to create a beautifully-contoured silhouette and flat mid-section by tightening the abdominal muscles, removing excess skin, and achieving final shaping with liposuction.

There are two primary factors that commonly affect the appearance of the abdomen, including weight fluctuations and pregnancy. Both of these factors cause stretching of the abdominal skin and muscles. If you are a candidate for a mini-tummy tuck some of the advantages as opposed to a full abdominoplasty include:

  • Shorter surgery time
  • Shorter recovery time
  • The incision scar is well hidden just above the pubic hairline
  • There is no incision around the belly button

Since pregnancy can stretch the abdominal skin and musculature, women who are postpartum are typically excellent candidates for abdominoplasty. Sometimes the skin recoils after pregnancy, and some women do not experience an excess of skin following pregnancy. Rather, there is a widening of the abdominal muscles knows as diastasis recti. This gapping of the abdominal muscles may cause a bulge in the lower abdomen that can be corrected with a mini-abdominoplasty.

Women interested in a mini-abdominoplasty should generally wait about 6 months after their last delivery in order to achieve natural contraction of skin and muscle.* It is generally advised to defer surgery if future pregnancies are planned. While abdominoplasty will not affect the safety of future pregnancies, the benefits of the surgery may be lost.

Recovery from a mini-abdominoplasty varies, but is typically about 7-10 days. Less extensive procedures may require 1 week of downtime, while more extensive procedures may require between 10-14 days of downtime. Generally, return to exercise and normal activity is between 4-6 weeks.* Dr. Afrooz will prescribe the appropriate postoperative course for each individual patient.

I met with Dr. Afrooz at the end of May 2017 requesting for guidance on abdominal plastic surgery. The feedback l received from him was not only educational but helped me make a decision in less than two weeks. Dr. Afrooz is an artist, perfectionist and individualizes his treatment plan based on what you desire. He guides you every step of the way, puts into consideration your input.*”

Achieving the ideal abdomen requires a strong sense of aesthetics, a thorough understanding of anatomy, as well as surgical skill and experience. Dr. Paul N. Afrooz completed a fellowship in aesthetic surgery after his general training in plastic surgery, and has a particular interest in abdominoplasty and body contouring.

In addition, Dr. Afrooz’s philosophy is not simply the removal of excess fat, but the shaping and contouring of fat in order to provide a very feminine contour and curvature that creates beautiful results. When fat is contoured precisely and artistically, it contributes to a beautiful contour. Therefore, our philosophy is one of tightening muscles and skin, while also shaping fat to create a beautiful and feminine silhouette.
