“Beauty Through Mastery”
Dr. Paul N. Afrooz is the newest addition to The Institute of Aesthetic Medicine. Dr. Afrooz was selected by Dr. James Stuzin and Dr. Steven Fagien based on his record of academic distinction and excellence in plastic surgery.
Dr. Afrooz received his Bachelor of Science from Cornell University and his medical degree from the Chicago Medical School, where he served as President of his class. He also was the distinguished recipient of the Dean’s Award for academic achievement and contribution to the medical school through teaching and student body governance.
Plastic Surgery Training
Dr. Afrooz completed a seven-year Plastic Surgery Residency in the Integrated Plastic Surgery Program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, one of the most prestigious and competitive plastic surgery training programs in the country. Widely known for a commitment to research, academia, and clinical excellence in plastic surgery, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has trained some of the foremost clinical and academic leaders in plastic surgery today. During his tenure at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Afrooz gained extensive experience in cancer and trauma reconstruction, while also fostering a passion for aesthetic surgery.
Following residency training, Dr. Afrooz was selected as the Aesthetic Surgery Fellow at The Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute (DPSI), the most coveted and competitive aesthetic surgery fellowship in the country – selected on the merits of distinction in research, plastic surgery education, technical skill, and the recommendation of his mentors and peers. During his time at DPSI he honed his skills in rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty, and performed extensive cosmetic surgery of the face, neck, breast and body.
Areas of Expertise and Specialization
Similar to our practice philosophy, The Institute of Aesthetic Medicine physician specialists believe that excellent results are attainable through a passion for aesthetic surgery, attention to detail, and a commitment to our patients to deliver the very best in aesthetic plastic surgery.
Rhinoplasty or nasal shaping remains one of the most challenging operations in plastic surgery. The nose is the confluence of bone, cartilage, skin and soft tissue, and is the centerpiece of the face. The ability to achieve consistent and excellent results requires passion, precision, and dedication, as rhinoplasty is a surgery of millimeters. Dr. Afrooz’s passion for rhinoplasty began in medical school. Since then he has trained with world-experts and authored numerous publications on rhinoplasty in peer-reviewed journals and chapters in plastic surgery textbooks. He recently served as faculty for the Dallas Rhinoplasty Symposium in Shanghai, China, where he lectured and performed live rhinoplasty. He continues to serve as an annual faculty member for the Dallas Rhinoplasty Symposium, the most prestigious rhinoplasty educational symposium in the world.
Aesthetic Breast Surgery
During Dr. Afrooz’s fellowship, he trained extensively in aesthetic breast and body contouring surgery, including breast augmentation, breast lift (mastopexy), and revision breast surgery. Dr. Afrooz trained under the philosophy that breast size and shape must be strongly related to body type and a patient’s personal preference; with the goal of attaining the appropriate size, contour, and projection of the breasts, which is patient specific. Dr. Afrooz helps his patients achieve these goals by utilizing the most advanced surgical techniques and the newest form-stable silicone gel breast implants.
Dr. Afrooz’s training in body contouring surgery began at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center under the leadership of Dr. J. Peter Rubin, a pioneer in the field of aesthetic body contouring surgery. While at the University of Pittsburgh, he performed numerous body contouring procedures, and further refined his training at the Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute with many of the world’s leaders in body contouring surgery. He has authored several book chapters in plastic surgery textbooks on body contouring surgery including abdominoplasty, liposuction, and gluteal augmentation.
Dr. Afrooz continues to demonstrate a commitment to excellence and innovation through research and teaching. He has been the recipient of several grants and scholarships from the Plastic Surgery Education Foundation and the Aesthetic Surgery Education and research Foundation. He has presented his research nationally and internationally and has received multiple research awards—most notably, at the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Dr. Afrooz was twice the recipient of the Gaspar W. Anastasi Research Award. As a testament to his passion for teaching, Dr. Afrooz’s peers and students elected him to receive the Resident Teaching Award during his residency at the University of Pittsburgh. He remains committed to teaching and research with over 50 publications in peer-reviewed plastic surgery journals and textbooks.
