Tranconjunctival blepharoplasty is a minimally invasive cosmetic surgical procedure to remove lower eyelid bags. The technique involves an incision inside the lower eyelid, and there are no external skin incisions. This procedure is typically indicated in younger patients with bags but with little skin excess.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF TRANSCONJUNCTIVAL BLEPHAROPLASTY?
Dr. Steven Fagien explains that the goal of a transconjunctival blepharoplasty is to remove and/or reposition the fat in the lower eyelid. The fat pockets are the reasons women and men have under-eye bags and a tired appearance. The advantages of this technique are as follows:
- Smaller risk of ectropion (lower eyelid pulling away from eye)
- Ability to assess results during procedure and refine
- Less bruising and swelling
- No visible scarring*
- Good for patients who had previous lower eyelid surgery
HOW IS BLEPHAROPLASTY SURGERY PERFORMED?
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, provides the most effective and longest-lasting improvement for under-eye bags. A specific technique called transconjunctival blepharoplasty is often used to remove or reposition eye-area fat through incisions made inside the lower eyelid. If excess skin needs to be removed, an additional incision is made just beneath the lower lash line (which is nearly undetectable once healed). After excess skin and/or fat are addressed, the tissues surrounding the tear trough are reshaped and repositioned as needed to create a smooth contour between the lower eyelid and cheek. These techniques can offer comprehensive rejuvenation for the entire under-eye area.
The recovery from transconjunctival blepharoplasty is typically fast, and most patients can return to work or social activity within a week to 10 days.* In the hands of an experienced surgeon, transconjunctival blepharoplasty is a safe and effective procedure to rejuvenate your eyes.
